GPA acquires U.S. Quartermaster Depot, a 407-acre tract located along  the Savannah River in Garden City for $800,000. This purchase created Garden City Terminal to handle bulk and general cargoes and, later, containerized cargo.

The purchase of the U.S. Army Quartermaster’s depot in Garden City launched a new and exciting era for the southeastern U.S. shipping industry.  The 407-acre tract included 5.41 miles of warehouses and the wooden docks that served as embarkation points for the military during World War II.
